Some Golf Clubs Call for Different Situations
Golf is a game which requires a wide skill set. Some shots call for power and distance; other times more subtlety and accuracy is desired of a certain shot. The terrain and set up can vary greatly from shot to shot. Well groomed grass, trees and (uh-oh) sand traps are all “par for the course”.
A different club is called for different shots. Depending on your skilll level, some shots will be more challenging than others – though this will also to some extent dependent on the club you use.
For example, say you've got a 200 yard shot to make over the water hazard to a small green on the other side. Each skill level – beginner, intermediate or advanced will do better on this sort of shot with a different club. The beginner will rely largely on advice from more experienced players here and perhaps a whispered prayer.
An intermediate player will be more concerned about choosing an effictive club for the shot, while an advanced player will think carefully about the details of clubs when deciding which to use for the shot – clubhead response and so on, all of which is far beyond what a beginning player need concern themselves with at this time. It was once the case that all three of these players would be very limited in their choice of club, but no there are many more options available.
Which Clubs are the most important?
Golf involves many different types of shots. These include drives, chip shots, putts and those that we will politely call troublesome shots (all though these often go by a less printable name out on the green).
Putts are the shots most commonly seen in a game of golf. On average, a golfer uses the putter more than twice as often as any other given club in their set. This makes the putter the most important club in your golf bag. For instance, about 40% of strokes taken in a game where a golfer scores 100 are putts.
Next most important is the #1 wood, or driver. The driver accounts for somewhere between 10-20% of shots taken in a typical golf game (depending on the terrain of the course and the skill level of the player). The driver is very important; a bad drive makes for a bad game of golf after all.
The wedge may be used almost as much as the driver. This is especially true of beginning players who have a difficult time getting to the green in the proper number of strokes. A beginner will usually use up to twenty strokes getting to the green.
In a normal game of golf, the other clubs will come into play, but rarely more than two or three times per game. Driver, putter and wedge are used far more often than the rest of your set. Think of these three as the stars of your set of clubs, with the rest playing supporting roles.
A club which is hard to use will cause untold problems for the novice golfer. The harder it is to use, the more mishaps will happen. Irons, drivers and woods all carry the risk of making for a truly awful shot for the less experienced golfer. Of course, you could just bring an entire bucket of balls, but there is an easier way to get your golf game going well.
