Featured Golf Article: Mental Golf Tips To Improve Your Performance

Courtesy of Stephen Ladd of Renegade Mental Golf

This brief article reveals three mental golf tips utilizing a cutting-edge technique known as "tapping".

What is Tapping?

"Tapping" is a do-it-yourself form of acupuncture that we use for golf psychology, except you don't use needles. Instead you simply "tap" on a few "clearing points" while focusing on and saying (to yourself, if appropriate) the negative feeling or emotion.

For the sake of simplicity, the following golf tips will only use a single point, referred to as the "collar bone point". However, it is not the exact collar bone, but rather the two bony notches at the base of your neck. It is about the spot where you would knot a necktie. Just "tap" this point with an open hand approximately 10 times as instructed in the tips below.

It's that simple...

Golf Tips # 1 - "Tapping" in your Pre-shot Routine

Tap while focusing on any negative feeling or emotion you might have about the upcoming shot.

If you don't have anything in particular, just use the term "tension".

Take a deep breath and say to yourself "Let it be easy".

Step up and swing the club.

Golf Tips # 2 - "Tapping" in your Post-shot Routine

What...you don't have a post-shot routine? That's the subject for another article. For now we'll keep it simple and divide your shot results into either positive or negative.

1. If the shot ended up where you intended (Positive) -

Simply tap and say "Exactly", "Spot on", "Nice", or any other positive phrase indicating to yourself that you manifested the intended result.

2. If the shot did NOT play out as planned (Negative) -

Tap and say "Anger", "Frustration", or whatever emotion the less-than-perfect shot brings up.

Take a deep breath.

Say to yourself "This is more what I had in mind"....

And then take another easy practice stroke and visualize the ball going exactly where you intended.

This is very important because it will plant in your subconscious mind this more positive result.

Golf Tips # 3 - "Tapping" for Anger Management

Is there any activity on earth that people love to hate more than golf?

Any time that you feel anger on the course, just tap and say "anger", "pissed off" or whatever best describes your feelings (and is somewhat appropriate given your environment).

Take a deep breath.

Don't be fooled into believing that something so simple can't be effective. Try these mental golf tips out for yourself and then make your own decision.

Monthly Golf Tip: Checking Your Golf Grip with Your Clubhead

Courtesy of Dr. Richard Myers of ThinkandReachPar.com

I never play a shot without first glancing at my hands. What I check before address is the alignment of the grip with the face of the club. They go together.

Most golfers know of this relationship between the hands and the club face-at least, they know it theoretically-but the ordinary golfer rarely puts it into practice. Very often, while he is fiddling with his grip, he inadvertently rotates the shaft and twists the club face out of alignment. Most pros, on the other hand, knowing that the grip is correct only when it is correctly aligned with the club face, take pains to check this fundamental of good golf. If you have ever watched Jimmy Demaret, you have no doubt seen him affix his grip, raising the club until his hands are only a foot or so in front of his eyes. Then Jimmy sights down the shaft and checks both his hands and the club head as one unit.

Gripping a club, you see, is like aiming a rifle. If your hands are improperly aligned with the club head, you will hit only a few isolated accurate shots. I never trust my grip entirely to feel. I can go off too easily, and after a couple of days the incorrect grip will feel fine and natural. Once you start your swing, you must trust entirely to feel, for your eye is fixed on the ball. However, before you start to play your shot, you have the chance to check the relation of the grip and the club head visually. The results are well worth the effort.

Improving your Golf Fitness through a Proper Diet Regime

A Great Way to Get in Condition Now the Season is Well Underway!

Article Courtesy of PerformBetterGolf.com

A golf conditioning program should always be accompanied by a solid golf nutrition plan. In essence, what you eat determines how you play. So, which foods produce champions and which foods hinder play? Let me give you a few hints.

It goes without saying that proper nutrition is important for all of us. But, if you are serious about shaving valuable strokes off your scorecard, you need to make some tough decisions on seeing your diet through. If you travel for golf, or play in frequent tournaments, it is important not to fall into the trap of ‘settling’ for fast food or a quick bag of chips or chocolate bar. It is common knowledge that golfers don’t typically pay attention to on course nutrition nor do beverage carts come equipped with nutritionally advantageous foods. Regardless, if you make a commitment to a diet full of carbohydrates, proteins and fats along with a wealth of water, you can watch your score start to drop!

Things to avoid during the season:

  • A golfer should avoid caffeine and alcohol. Both of these are diuretics and cause fluid loss. They also both affect performance. Coffee can over stimulate your mind or your muscles, making your performance uncontrolled. Excessive consumption of alcohol severely affects your coordination.
  • Avoid large amounts of food in the two hours leading up to tee time. Food in your digestive system diverts blood away from your brain and muscles, affecting concentration and physical performance. A meal two to three hours before play is preferred.
  • Don’t skip meals. Golfers need that slow and steady release of energy to see them through difficult or long hours of play. Smaller meals are better to help increase metabolism.

As a golfer, especially if you are of a championship calibre, it is essential to have a wide variety of complex carbohydrates to maintain your energy through an 18-hole match or a 72-hole tournament.

Mentally your brain needs to stay conditioned to tell your body what to do, not to mention calculating distances, swing strength and maintaining focus. This is another reason why eating complex carbohydrates is important for your golf game.

When you join Perform Better Golf, you can expect to learn all the fine details of a golf performance diet. Learn which foods you should avoid before and during play and which foods produce quick energy when you need it most. How much carbohydrates are needed to give you the mental edge? Which carbohydrates are better than others? Find out what functional foods for golf activate your greatest performance yet! Sign up now and Improve your Golf fitness for the new season!
